Background

CWP is developing its Power-to-X (P2X) project AMAN in the regions of Dakhlet Nouadhibou and Inchiri, in Mauritania. The project will be developed in stages. Under an exclusivity arrangement with the government of Mauritania the two parties are working towards a long-term concession agreement ascribing the land rights and the framework for the project.

Scope

Power-to-X (also known as PtX or P2X) is a collective term for conversion technologies that turn electricity into carbon-neutral synthetic fuels, such as hydrogen, synthetic natural gas, liquid fuels, or chemicals. These can be used in sectors that are hard to decarbonise or, unlike electric power, to be stored for later use.

In 2022 we developed a proprietary model using the Python programming language to screen various options for a P2X system to produce green hydrogen and liquid ammonia based on the block schematic below.

The model was able to suggest the infrastructure required to achieve the P2X system outputs as defined by the user. This included pipeline sizes, compressor requirements and necessary power availability. The model also generates CAPEX and OPEX estimates for such a system.

This work included developing a catalogue of process design, electrical design and cost data for a series of hydrogen, ammonia and water pipelines, and associated facilities and electrical transmission systems, including transformers and substations.

We also performed pipeline and electrical transmission sizing for a range of process design parameters and routing corridors.

Ultimately, we developed high-level capital cost estimates for pipelines, compression facilities, ammonia plants and the associated electrical systems.

This software model work was followed-up by a high-level feasibility study of the construction of two parallel hydrogen pipelines in Mauritania. For the purposes of this study, pipeline sizing, safety, corrosion, constructibility and routing was considered.
